Encapsulated lancet-shaped gram positive diplococci

Epidemiology

Normal flora and important cause of invasive disease, often vaccine preventable

Associated syndromes

  • Community-acquired pneumonia

  • Bacteremia

  • Meningitis

  • Many other syndromes possible but uncommon including endocarditis, osteomyelitis, etc

Additional Information

The PCV-13 vaccine against 13 strains of S. pneumoniae is publically funded in Canada as part of the routine childhood immunization.

Invasive pneumococcal disease is a reportable disease

PCR testing from CSF is available if culture is negative and infection is still suspected. Please contact microbiology on call for this test.
