General Information

Gram positive coccobacilli

Grows poorly on solid media, joint fluid should be inoculated into blood culture bottles or specimen sent for molecular testing using PCR

Colonizes the oropharynx, more commonly in infants and young children

Most common cause of septic arthritis in children <4 years

Can also cause other invasive infections (bacteremia, infective endocarditis).
