Standard Precautions
Gram-positive cocci in clusters.
Many species of coagulase-negative Staphylococci colonize the skin of all humans.
Most coagulase-negative Staphylococci identified in the laboratory are "skin contaminants" encountered when the sample was taken from or through the skin. They can be pathogenic esp. when associated with foreign material (e.g. intravenous lines, prothetic joints, vascular grafts, CNS shunts).
