Post-Operative Antibiotics

Antibiotics should be discontinued at the time of incision closure with the exception of implant-based breast reconstruction, joint arthroplasty and cardiac thoracic procedures (implantation of prosthetic material or CABG).

Post-operative doses for these exceptions should not be given beyond 24 hours after incision.

In general, there is no evidence that antibiotic administration after incision closure decreases surgical site infection risk across a range of procedures including clean, clean-contaminated and possibly contaminated wound classes.
