Catheter-Associated UTI

Catheter-Associated UTI

Treatment

Remove catheter if no longer required and evaluate for symptom resolution. If symptoms continue to be present, send a voided midstream urine before initiating antibiotics.

If catheter still required, replace catheter and re-culture BEFORE initiating antibiotics.

Select agents as for cystitis unless sepsis or upper urinary tract infection / pyelonephritis suspected.

Duration of Treatment

If catheter removed, treat as cystitis.

If catheter not removed, treat for 7 days. Extend to day 10 or 14 if slow resolution of symptoms.
