Consult ID if multi-drug resistant.

  • Piperacillin/tazobactam

  • Ampicillin-sulbactam

  • Cefepime

  • Fluoroquinolone

  • Amikacin

  • Doxycycline


Pathogen information

Resistant aerobic Gram negative coccobacillus


Generally causes nosocomial infection in North America and can occur in outbreaks in this setting.

Infections seen in military personnel in war zones, nursing facilities as well as natural disaster settings, i.e. tsunami/earthquake

Associated syndromes

  • VAP

  • Bloodstream infections

  • Biofilm infections of prosthetic devices

  • Wound infection/SSTI

  • UTI

  • May be a colonizer

Additional Information

Contact Precautions if resistant to meropenem

For multidrug resistant Acinetobacter, Infectious Disease consultation recommended to assist in evaluation/management and infection control measures

Patients identified as positive for MDR Acinetobacter must remain in contact precautions for the duration of hospitalization and for each readmission.
