Gram positive cocci in chains

Epidemiology

Normal oral and gastrointestinal flora.

Consists of Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus intermedius, and Streptococcus constellatus.

Formerly known as the Streptococcus milleri group.

Associated syndromes

  • Abscesses - intra-abdominal, hepatic, cerebral, empyema

  • Bacteremia

Additional Information

Streptococcus anginosus is very abscessogenic. Generally abscesses need surgical drainage depending on size/location.
