Epidemiology

Normal gastrointestinal flora and can be associated with nosocomial infections

Associated syndromes

Proteus mirabilis can be associated with urinary tract infections but can also cause other nosocomial infections. Association with struvite stones and persistence within stones accounts for recurrent infection.

Additional Information

Proteus vulgaris species is more resistant to antimicrobials than Proteus mirabilis.
