Key Laboratory Investigations
Cerebrospinal fluid should be sent for the following investigations in all patients with suspected acute bacterial meningitis: CSF cell count and differential, protein, glucose, Gram stain and culture.
Blood cultures x 2 sets should be collected in all patients with suspected acute bacterial meningitis.
In cases of subacute or chronic meningitis, strongly consider Infectious Diseases and Neurology consultations to guide further investigations and mangement.
Papilledema
Immunocompromised state (eg. HIV infection or AIDS, immunosuppressive therapy or transplantation)
Focal neurological deficit except cranial nerve VI or VII palsy
History of CNS disease (e.g. mass lesion, stroke, focal infection)
Abnormal level of consciousness
History of seizure < 1 week before presentation
