Anaerobic small, Gram-negative bacilli (often referred to as "cocco-bacilli")

Epidemiology

Most common anaerobic organism identified in infections "below the diaphragm."

Colonizes GI tract of all humans, colon>small bowel.

Associated syndromes

  • Intra-abdominal abscess/sepsis

  • Perianal abscess

  • Tubo-ovarian abscess

  • Bacteremia
