Suspected Line Infection

Suspected Line Infection

Examine the site for localized inflammation (erythema, tenderness, purulence at line site) - very specific for line infection and indicates need for urgent line removal.

Obtain blood cultures: one from each line (including arterial line) and one peripheral.

Evaluate for other causes of fever and obtain relevant cultures.

Most suspected line infections are not proven to be catheter related infections.
