These guidelines were developed by the Island Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in collaboration with multiple health care professionals. They represent consensus based on evidence-based guidelines informed by local microbiology and susceptibility patterns. The purpose of these guidelines is to guide initial selection of empiric antimicrobial therapy leading to optimum patient outcomes while minimizing the development and sustenance of Antimicrobial Resistance.
These guidelines do not replace clinical judgment. A thorough clinical assessment is required to identify factors which may necessitate alternative or additional therapy.
