IP&C Recommendations - Viral Respiratory Illness

Precautions

  • Medical grade face mask required when patient facing
  • Effective during respiratory virus season (October - April)
  • Perform a PCRA prior to contact with every patient, every time
  • Use for all suspect or confirmed patients with mild/moderate symptoms with no risk of Aerosol Generating Medical Procedure (AGMP).
  • Use for all suspect or confirmed patients when it has been determined that the patient is severe/critically ill and there is a risk that an AGMP will be required.
  • An AGMP is any procedure conducted on a patient that can induce production of aerosols of various sizes, including droplet nuclei. Follow the link above for a list of AGMPs and guidance statements.
