Dosing

General Information

PO only

  • Adminsiter with meals to improve absorption and decrease side effects
  • Suspension may be mixed with water, milk or fruit juice. Shake well before use
  • Macrobid capsules should not be opened
  • Macrodantin capsules may be opened and mixed with food or juice for immediate use
  • Uncomplicated cystitis in females with normal renal function
  • Off label use for pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria (category B, contraindicated at term)
  • Sings of pulmonary reaction
  • Numbness or tingling of extremities
  • Periodic CBC and renal function test with long-term use
  • Interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis especially with prolonged use.
  • Peripheral neuropathy.
  • Antacids decrease absorption
  • Norfloxacin effects diminished by Nitrofurantoin

Biliary penetration: None

Macrobid, Macrodantin, Furadantin

Think of this drug as a urinary antiseptic.

Not recommended in males due to inadequate tissue penetration, especially with possible occult prostatitis.
