Urinary Tract Infxn

Urinary Tract Infection

Anatomical abnormality of the urinary tract including obstruction (i.e. stone), ileal conduit/urinary diversion, and instrumentation/foreign body (i.e. stent, nephrostomy tube).

Immunosuppressed patients (this includes poorly controlled diabetes).

Caution

The unnecessary treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria is a significant cause of inappropriate antibiotic treatment in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The most common cause of treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria is inappropriate submission of urine culture.

DO NOT submit urine culture or urine dipstick for the following inappropriate reasons:

  1. Delirium
  2. Fever without genitourinary symptoms
  3. Change in appearance of urine
  4. Pre-operative screening (except urological procedures which disrupt the uroepithelium)
