General Information

Aerobic Gram negative bacillus

Humans are the reservoir - fecal-oral transmission.

Increased prevalence in developing countries.

Highest prevalence South Asia.

  • Fever in Returning Traveler
  • Enteric fever
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Bacteremia
  • Intra-abdominal abscess
  • Meningitis
  • Endovascular infection including endocarditis and infected atherosclerotic plaque/aneurysm - "sticky" organism

Vaccination only prevents ~75% of disease.

Chronic carriage associated with gallbladder disease.

Treatment of carrier state is recommended to reduce transmission.
