Renally cleared, requires dosage adjustment with changes in renal function. Consult a pharmacist for renal dosing.

General Information

Common Usage

Skin and soft tissue infection (i.e. cellulitis).

Surgical prophylaxis.

Susceptible Staphylococcal, Streptococcal and Gram negative infections.

Adverse Effects

Allergy (immediate or delayed).

Can cause positive Coombs, cytopenias.

Major Interactions

Probenecid - prolonged half-life. Drug interaction has been used therapeutically to give once daily cefazolin

Pharmacology

Antimicrobial class: 1st Generation Cephalosporin

Average serum half life:

  • Neonates: 3-5 hours

  • Adults: 1.8 hours

Route of Elimination: excreted unchanged in urine
