General Information

Gram negative bacilli

Humans and animals can be reservoirs of Salmonella spp. Infection can occur through fecal-oral transmission or ingestion of contaminated water/food.

  • Food-borne illness
  • Infectious colitis
  • Intra-abdominal abscess
  • Bacteremia and endovascular infection (endocarditis, infected atherosclerotic plaque/aneurysm)

Generally a self-limited illness which should not be treated with antibiotics. However, treatment is indicated in patients who are immunocompromised, bacteremic or have metastatic foci of infection or bloody diarrhea. Consultation with Infectious Diseases is recommended.
