General Information

Gram negative bacilli

Humans and animals can be reservoirs of Salmonella spp. Infection can occur through fecal-oral transmission or ingestion of contaminated water/food.

  • Fever in returned traveler
  • Enteric fever
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Intra-abdominal abscess
  • Meningitis
  • Bacteremia and endovascular infection (endocarditis, infected atherosclerotic plaque/aneurysm)

High rates of fluoroquinolone resistance have been described in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
