Staphylococcus lugdunensis

General Information

Gram positive cocci in clusters. Coagulase negative.

Skin flora

  • Endocarditis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Blood stream infections
  • Prosthetic joint infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Has been isolated from blood in women with fever in labour

Coagulase negative but clinically behaves more like Staphylococcus aureus and is more virulent than other coagulase-negative Staphylococci.
