General Information

  • Treatment of infections due to susceptible gram positive and gram negative organisms

NON HEALTH CANADA APPROVED INDICATIONS BUT SUBSTANTIATED IN THE LITERATURE

  • Endocarditis prophylaxis in patients with a predisposing heart condition who are undergoing surgery
  • For prophylaxis of intrapartum streptococcus group B infection of the infant, penicillin is preferred agent although ampicillin may be used
  • Hypersensitivity to ampicillin, any component of formulation or any other penicillin
  • Previous anaphylactic reaction to a cephalosporin in particular cefaclor, cephalexin or cefprozil

Increased risk of rash with allopurinol

  • Advise patients to report burning/stinging/pain at IV site promptly
