Susceptibilities

General Information

Gram positive cocci in chains.

  • Oral flora
  • Transient microbiota of the normal skin
  • Many species including Streptococcus mitis, S. sanguis, S. mutans, S. salivarius
  • S. gallolyticus (bovis) although separate is treated in the same way
  • Bacteremia
  • Endocarditis
  • Abscess

Immunosuppressed patients:

  • Sepsis
  • Pneumonia

The clinical significance of blood cultures growing streptococci from the S. bovis group lies in the association of S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus with colon cancer.
