Facultatively anaerobic non-lactose fermenting Gram-negative bacillus of the Enterobacterales order.
Naturally found in the lower gastrointestinal tract of humans (02-0.6% of healthy individuals) and animals.
Global distribution. Transmission mainly through fecal-oral ingestion (contaminated food products or water), direct contact with colonized animals (e.g. pet reptiles), or more infrequently person-to-person spread.
Humans/animals are the reservoir (i.e. reptiles - turtles/lizards, transovarial transmission in chickens-> eggs).
