Neonatal HSV
Neonatal HSV
Neonatal Symptoms
Skin-Eyes-Mouth (SEM)
Check skin, eye including conjunctivitis and mucous membranes for lesions
CNS
CNS involvement or encephalitis and may have vesicular skin lesions
Disseminated
May involve multiple organ systems such as lungs, liver, adrenal glands, CNS and can have vesicular skin lesions
Other
Consider HSV in neonates with sepsis syndrome or disproportionate liver dysfunction
Consider if no improvement on antibiotics for >24 hrs
Consider HSV in neonates with fever, irritability, abnormal CDF findings, thrombocytopenia and seizures
Normal CSF cell count and biochemical parameters do not exclude neonatal HSC CNS infection
