Appropriate antibiotic therapy directed against bacterial pathogens isolated from the respiratory tract is an essential component in the management of CF lung disease
Evaluate patient allergies
Antibiotic prescriptions should generally be guided by the most recent positive culture result. Exception Pseudomonas aeruginosa is generally covered unless it has not grown in >6-12 months
Antibiotic duration is generally 14 days unless specified by the CF provider
If the patient has been on an antibiotic within 3 months, one might consider a different antibiotic
CF patients may have polymicrobial infections (more than 1 organism)
In general the more clinically significant pathogens are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae
